Keynote Speaking Topics

Jen currently speaks to four main topics which are borne out of her legal practice and advocacy work. Each talk is individually tailored to suit the client.

1. Women’s rights

Jen is dedicated to defending women’s rights and equality. She has a particular focus on ensuring women’s right to free speech about their experience of gender-based violence, as a crucial part of the fight to end violence against women and girls. She talks to her book How Many More Women published under the UK title Silenced Women: Why the Law Fails Women and How to Fight Back which explores how our legal system continues to silence and disadvantage women

2. Freedom of Expression.

Free speech is a key aspect of Jen’s legal work. Jen has extensive experience in media defence work, advising media outlets and journalists on all aspects of investigation and publication, as well as in response to threats to freedom of expression and safety, including arbitrary detention and extra-judicial killing. Her clients have included WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange, the BBC World Service, imprisoned Hong Kong media entrepreneur and editor, Jimmy Lai, and the families of journalists killed in the course of their work, including Daphne Caruana Galizia, Shireen Abu Akleh and Issam Abdallah.

3. Climate Justice

Jen has committed a part of her practice to climate justice and has acted in ground-breaking cases in domestic and international courts. Key cases include having fracking declared unlawful on climate grounds in England and Wales, successfully challenging anti-protest injunctions aimed at stifling climate protests, and in 2024, taking states’ climate change and human rights obligations to the International Court of Justice.

4. Public education.

Having attended Berry Public School and Bomaderry High School in NSW, Jen credits her success to her public schooling in Australia. She is a vocal supporter of better funding for public schools and equity in education. In 2021, Jen co-founded the Acacia Awards in partnership with the Public Education Foundation. The awards provide financial support and mentoring to promising public school students across Australia and aims to build a network of public-school alumni to support and inspire current students. In 2025 she was awarded ‘Alumni of Year’ by the New South Wales Department of Education
